While we use words to interact with our world, they can be used to create new worlds as well.
A fantasy writer can hardly mention worldbuilding without bringing up some of the genre’s great trailblazers. Their popularity has inspired writers to fill their stories with races and creatures, kingdoms and clans that do not exist on our earth. Each group has its own language and culture, just as you would expect to find when traveling from one place to another here.
When the recognizable, universal elements of language and culture are inserted into the land of elves and talking animals, they make the fantastical more believable. Stories centered around myth and legends as well as history are another contributor to culture that makes societies unique. For instance, a tale added to a fictional society that explains why something is the way it is, adds another dimension to literary kingdoms.
No one, including myself, wants to retell the stories of those who came before us. Instead, the challenge and great joy of being a fantasy writer is to create a new world to explore and fresh stories to tell.
With this page I don’t simply want to write a history, I want to tell it. I don’t have the patience to create lists of people, places, and things. History listed as facts are boring, but when told as a story it invites adventure.
Every tale here contributes another stroke to the canvas of the kingdoms and countries contained in the pages of the Tales From Orin Nodd. You will be introduced to heroes and villains; people and places; language and culture.
I plan for this venture to be an ongoing and expanding series of tales. This is a passion project of mine which I hope you will enjoy as well.
Get started by reading some of my short stories which introduce some legends. Or discover more worldbuilding in Haydn the Outcast and its ongoing sequel Blade of the Adeln.
Join me in the discovery of this new world!
